Aviation Resourcesv1.0.6

Use Aviation Resources with your AI assistant

Connect Claude, ChatGPT or any assistant that supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) to the FAA handbooks and Airman Certification Standards. Your assistant can then look things up in the actual FAA material, show you the page, and tell you where it found the answer.

Server URL
https://api.aviationresources.io/mcp

Paste this into your assistant's "add connector" or "add MCP server" screen. Steps for each app are below.

What your assistant can do

Every answer comes with a link that opens the exact page in Aviation Resources, so you can check it yourself.

Try asking

Mentioning "Aviation Resources" or a handbook by name helps your assistant decide to look it up.

Set it up

Claude claude.ai and the Claude apps
  1. Open Customize › Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Aviation Resources and paste the server URL.
  4. For authentication, choose No sign in, then click Add.
  5. In a chat, click + › Connectors and make sure Aviation Resources is turned on.

Works on every plan, including Free (which allows one custom connector). On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it under Organization settings › Connectors, then each member clicks Connect.

ChatGPT
  1. Open Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create.
  3. Name it Aviation Resources, paste the server URL, and set authentication to No authentication.
  4. Click Create.
  5. In a new chat, click + › More and choose Aviation Resources.

Custom connectors in ChatGPT need Developer mode, which isn't available on every plan. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin may need to turn it on first. ChatGPT changes these menus often; if a name doesn't match, look for "Apps" or "Connectors" in Settings.

Claude Code

Run:

claude mcp add --transport http aviation-resources https://api.aviationresources.io/mcp
VS Code GitHub Copilot agent mode

Run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette and add:

{
  "servers": {
    "aviation-resources": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.aviationresources.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Or put the same thing in .vscode/mcp.json to add it to one project only.

Cursor

Open Settings › Tools & MCP, click Add Custom MCP, and add this to mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "aviation-resources": {
      "url": "https://api.aviationresources.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The tools are available in Agent mode. If the server doesn't appear, restart Cursor.

Other assistants

Any MCP client that supports the Streamable HTTP transport can connect to the server URL. No sign-in, API key or headers are needed.

Good to know

Check the source. AI assistants can still get things wrong. Use the page link that comes with each answer, and confirm anything that matters with your flight instructor. This is a study aid, not a substitute for instruction or the current FAA publications.

The content is the FAA's. The handbooks and Airman Certification Standards are public-domain FAA publications. Aviation Resources makes them searchable; it doesn't change them.

Nothing about you is shared. The server doesn't need an account and only reads public material. Your assistant sends it only search terms and page numbers, never your whole conversation.

For developers

Endpoint
POST https://api.aviationresources.io/mcp
Transport
Streamable HTTP, stateless: no session ID, a single JSON response per request. GET and DELETE return 405.
Authentication
None.
Tools
search_documents, get_page, list_airman_certification_standards. Clients discover input and output schemas with tools/list.
Results
Structured content plus JSON text. get_page also returns the page as a JPEG image block and links to the page in the web app and as a single-page PDF.
