COMM.IX.B — Emergency Approach and Landing (Simulated) (ASEL, ASES)

Objective: To determine that the applicant exhibits satisfactory knowledge, skills and risk management associated with a power failure at altitude and associated emergency approach and landing procedures.

Knowledge

The applicant demonstrates understanding of:

• CA.IX.B.K1Immediate action items and emergency procedures.
• CA.IX.B.K2Airspeed, to include:
  • CA.IX.B.K2aa. Importance of best glide speed and its relationship to distance
  • CA.IX.B.K2bb. Difference between best glide speed and minimum sink speed
  • CA.IX.B.K2cc. Effects of wind on glide distance
• CA.IX.B.K3Effects of atmospheric conditions on emergency approach and landing.
• CA.IX.B.K4A stabilized approach, to include energy management concepts.
• CA.IX.B.K5ELTs and other emergency locating devices.
• CA.IX.B.K6ATC services to aircraft in distress.

Risk Management

The applicant demonstrates the ability to identify, assess and mitigate risks, encompassing:

• CA.IX.B.R1Failure to consider altitude, wind, terrain, obstructions, gliding distance, and available landing distance.
• CA.IX.B.R2Failure to plan and follow a flightpath to the selected landing area.
• CA.IX.B.R3Collision hazards, to include aircraft, terrain, obstacles, and wires.
• CA.IX.B.R4Improper airplane configuration.
• CA.IX.B.R5Low altitude maneuvering including, stall, spin, or CFIT.
• CA.IX.B.R6Distractions, loss of situational awareness, or improper task management.

Skills

The applicant demonstrates the ability to:

• CA.IX.B.S2Configure the airplane in accordance with the POH/AFM and existing conditions.
• CA.IX.B.S3Select a suitable landing area considering altitude, wind, terrain, obstructions, and available glide distance.
• CA.IX.B.S4Plan and follow a flightpath to the selected landing area considering altitude, wind, terrain, and obstructions.
• CA.IX.B.S5Prepare for landing as specified by the evaluator.
• CA.IX.B.S6Complete the appropriate checklist.
